The San Diego Gulls killed 13 of 14 power plays and Trevor Koenig steered aside 48 shots, as they were able to squeeze out a 3-1 victory over the Bakersfield Condors Sunday afternoon, before 3,565 at Centennial Garden.

San Diego (3-0-0) jumped out on top for the third straight game midway through the opening frame. Dennis Purdie took the puck away from Condors winger Shawn Byram and fed a streaking Dean Tiltgen, who beat Bakersfield goaltender Fredrik Jensen. The Gulls kept the 1-0 lead heading into the second period, but only because of the stellar goaltending of Koenig. The Condors (1-2-0) dominated the play in the first period, out-shooting the Blue and Orange 25-10, but Koenig kept Bakersfield at bay.

The Condors had two great chances early in the second period to tie the game. The first came on a breakaway attempt by rookie Nate Anderson and the second on a point-blank shot from veteran Christian Skoryna, but Koenig once again thwarted the opportunities. Mark Pederson, however, didn't miss his chance and gave the Gulls a 2-0 cushion with his third tally at 13:55. Pederson passed the puck to himself, between the legs of Bakersfield defenseman David Bell, and wristed a shot past Jensen. Clayton Read earned the lone assist.

Bakersfield, skating with a two-man advantage, finally solved Koenig at 15:30 of the middle frame. Byram partially fanned on a shot, but the puck bounced right in front of the net, where Jamie Cooke was able to jam home his second goal of the season. Jeff Goldie and Byram were both credited with the helpers.

Tiltgen regained San Diego's two-goal lead with his second tally of the game - third of the season - at 12:04. The assists were given to R.J. Enga and Purdie. Koenig and company shut the door from there to preserve the 3-1 victory.
