Oct. 23, 2002 The San Diego Gulls suffered their second consecutive loss to the Idaho Steelheads in a penalty packed game, losing 3-2 in a shootout in front of 4,025 fans at the Bank of America Centre Wednesday night. Looking to revenge their Tuesday loss, the Gulls (3-1-1) drew first blood by scoring early in the first period with a goal by Clayton Read at 2:01, his first of the season. Jamie Black and Mark Pederson earned the assists. Not looking to back down, the Steelheads (4-1-1) evened the score at 12:04 with a goal by Dan Shermerhorn, assisted by Ben Keup. It was the first even strength goal that the Gulls have allowed this season. The Steelheads failed to score on a golden opportunity with a two-man advantage for almost four minutes at the beginning of the second period, with four Gulls players crowded into the penalty box. The Gulls penalty killing unit kept the Steelhead shots to a minimum while on the five on three. Former league MVP Shermerhorn earned his second goal of the game at 9:04 of the second period, putting the Steelheads ahead with a one-timer that beat San Diego goalie Trevor Koenig. The Gulls were quick to respond when defenseman Dennis Mullen tied the game with a goal at 14:06, an unassisted goal that sailed past Steelheads goalie Blair Allison on his glove side. Both teams were held scoreless in the third period, despite a five on three advantage for the Gulls, who only mustered one shot. San Diego held the Steelheads to just six shots. In the shootout, Dean Tiltgen scored the only goal for the Gulls. Marty Flichel, Shermerhorn and Cory Morgan scored for the Steelheads. Notepad The Gulls have been short-handed 49 times in their five games this season... The Steelheads have killed 49 of 50 penalties in six games... San Diego Head Coach Steve Martinson was ejected from the game at the beginning of the second period... The Gulls were 0 for 8 on the power play, the Steelheads 1 for 10...
