Oct. 26, 2002

The Long Beach Ice Dogs had a 12-day layoff, but didn't miss a beat as they defeated the San Diego Gulls 3-2 Saturday night at the Long Beach Arena. The Gulls, after winning their first three games, are winless in three. They've scored only four goals in that span.

The Gulls (3-2-1) took advantage of a rusty Ice Dogs team, who last played Oct. 13, jumping out to a 1-0 lead 2:27 into the first period. Trevor Sherban blasted a shot just inside the blue line that sailed over the shoulder of a screened Mike Buzak. R.J. Enga earned the lone assist on Sherban's first goal of the season. The lead was short-lived as Long Beach (1-2-0) tied the game at 8:34 on Chris Kenady's first tally. Kenady, being hampered from behind by a Gulls defenseman, got his stick free and tipped a shot past Trevor Koenig. The assists were credited to Tomas Hradecky and Chris Peyton.

Long Beach grabbed a 2-1 lead with a power-play goal midway through the second period. Kenady found a streaking Jamie O'Leary, who stepped around the San Diego defense and wristed a shot past the glove of Koenig. Tyler Johnston also assisted on O'Leary's first goal of the season. The goal came moments after Gulls rookie Trent Clark misfired on a short-handed breakaway.

Hradecky gave the Ice Dogs a two-goal cushion 1:24 into the third stanza. O'Leary carried the puck out of the corner and zipped a pass right on the tape of Hradecky's stick, who easily tapped home his second goal. Peyton was given the second helper, his second of the game. Mark Pederson netted his fourth goal to get the Gulls back to within one with 1:18 remaining, off assists from Mike Garrow and rookie David Neale. But Buzak and company shut the door from there and held on to the 3-2 win.

Notepad
The Gulls are 5-7-0 all-time in Long Beach during the regular season. They were 2-5 at the Long Beach Arena last season. The Blue and Orange are now 0 for their last 24 on the power play. San Diego played without the services of team captain Dennis Purdie, who was out with the flu. Clint Cabana, who missed half of last season with a shoulder injury, left the game late in the first period after re-injuring the same shoulder. He did not return. Marc Busenburg, Sylvain Deschatelets and Rob Voltera all remain with the American Hockey League's Hershey Bears…
