Nov. 2, 2002

R.J. Enga notched two goals and two assists leading the San Diego Gulls to an easy 4-1 victory over the Bakersfield Condors Saturday night at Centennial Garden. San Diego jumps to within four points of the first-place Idaho Steelheads.

The Gulls (5-4-1) dominated the first period out-shooting the Condors (3-3-0) 16-4 and out-scoring them 2-0. The Blue and Orange jumped out of the gate, scoring 1:02 into the contest. Enga won an end zone face off to Samy Nasreddine, who skated in and slipped a slap shot past Bakersfield goaltender Kevin St. Pierre. It was Nasreddine's first goal of the year and first tally since last February. Enga gave the Gulls a two-goal lead with his first marker of the night at 13:29, blasting another slap shot by St. Pierre. Mike Garrow and Dennis Purdie recorded the assists.

San Diego increased its lead to 4-0 with two more goals in the middle frame. Mark Pederson struck for the seventh time this season at 7:01, finishing off a tic-tac-toe play from Enga and Purdie. Then Enga recorded his fourth straight point with his second goal of the game – sixth of the season – at 16:37, off helpers from Joe Bianchi and Mike Garrow. The tally came with the Gulls on a two-man advantage. The Condors had a chance to get back into the game with three straight power plays midway through the period, but San Diego's stingy defense kept Bakersfield off the scoreboard.

The Blue and Orange got into penalty trouble in the third period when Dennis Mullen got a major penalty for a knee-to-knee hit on Bakersfield's Jason Jackman. Then Gulls netminder Trevor Koenig was whistled for a delay-of-game penalty. On the ensuing two-man advantage power play, Bakersfield finally got on the board. Jonathan Sorg's shot from the point deflected off a San Diego player and behind Koenig at 7:08. Christian Skoryna got the lone assist on Sorg's second goal. But that was as close as the Condors could get, as the Gulls settled down and coasted to the 4-1 win.
