Gulls Avoid Ice Dog Bite, Win 4-1

Dec. 11, 2002

San Diego goaltender Trevor Koenig was in outstanding form, turning aside 29 shots to help secure a win over the Long Beach Ice Dogs 4-1 in front of 1,633 hockey fans at the Long Beach Arena Wednesday night. With the win, the Gulls (10-10-1) pull within one point of the third-place Ice Dogs and are back at the .500 mark.

After playing arguably their best defensive game of the season with a win over the first-place Idaho Steelheads Monday night, San Diego gave a repeat performance, with both forwards and defensemen playing rock-solid.

Sylvain Deschatelets lit the lamp first, scoring his third goal of the season with a pretty pass from Cory Cyrenne. Deschatelets burst down the left wing to clear a Long Beach defenseman and parked in front of the net. He took the pass from Cyrenne and backhanded the puck just under the crossbar with Long Beach goaltender Danielle Dubé down on the ice. Cyrenne has one goal and four assists in four games with the Gulls. The tally came at 14:01 of the first period. R.J. Enga also earned an assist.

Clayton Read earned the second goal of the night when he intercepted an errant pass in the neutral zone and set sail into the Long Beach defensive zone, beating Dubé with a low shot on her glove side near the far post. The unassisted goal came at 1:41 of the second period.

Trevor Sherban earned a nice birthday goal when he found the back of the net after powering a shot from the bottom of the left circle, putting the Gulls ahead by three at 12:50 of the second period. Rookie Trent Clark earned the assist to help Sherban celebrate his 30th birthday.

Sandro Sbrocca gave the Gulls another point when he found the back of the net at 5:05 of the third period. Sbrocca received a pass from Enga and created a two-on-one rush with teammate Samy Nasreddine. Sbrocca skated down the right side then backhanded his shot from in front of the net, roofing the puck past Dubé just under the crossbar.

The Gulls held strong against Long Beach in a flurry of shots that eventually resulted in a goal by Tyler Johnston at 13:52 of the third period. Tyler Willis and Jeff Attard assisted on the goal that caught Koenig off-guard and off-balance.

In tonight's game, Long Beach netminder Dubé became the third female goaltender in North America to start in a professional hockey game. Dube, 26, played in part of the season opener against San Diego and was the WCHL's first female professional athlete.
