San Diego Doubles Up Anchorage, 6-3

»More Hockey News

Dec. 13, 2002

The San Diego Gulls got down early, but certainly weren't out. After trailing 3-1, San Diego scored five straight to wallop the Anchorage Aces 6-3 Friday night, before 4,380 at the San Diego Sports Arena. The Gulls have now won three straight and move up to third place in the West Coast Hockey League.

The Aces (7-17-1) were out-shot 14-5 in the opening period, but still managed to pot two goals past San Diego netminder Cris Classen, seeing his first action of the season. The Gulls (11-10-1) scored first however, on Mark Pederson's 10th goal of the season 3:45 into the contest. With the man advantage, Pederson was wide open between the hash marks, took a feed from Dean Tiltgen and roofed a wrist shot over the shoulder of Anchorage's Ryan Person. Trevor Sherban earned the second assist, his third point in as many games.

Dean Larson, WCHL all-time and current points leader, tied the game at 7:19, driving past Sherban and beating an outstretched Classen. Yvan Corbin and Don Martin tallied the assists on Larson's 13th goal. The Aces took a 2-1 lead with a power-play marker at 14:10 of the first. Ryan Moren netted his first of the campaign, fooling Classen with a weak wrist shot from the blue line. Ruslan Batyrshin and Kimbi Daniels earned the assists.

Anchorage took a two-goal lead at 6:37 of the second period, as Carl Drakensjo earned his sixth goal of the season. Drakensjo took a pass from Person, skated by the San Diego defense and blasted home a slap shot from the top of the circles.

The Gulls took over after that and tied the game, 3-3, late in the second. Tiltgen made it a one-goal contest when he stuffed in his first of the night at 17:35. Clayton Read and Pederson registered the helpers. Some 90 seconds later, Kevin Grant blasted home a power-play goal past a screened Person. Mike Garrow and Read assisted on Grant's first tally in a San Diego uniform. The Blue and Orange out-shot the Aces 19-6 in the middle frame.

Read put San Diego ahead for good with his fifth goal midway through the final stanza. Pederson fed Read, who skated into the slot and fired a shot top-shelf. But the Gulls weren't done, as they lit the lamp again at 13:58 on Tiltgen's second goal of the game – 12th of the season. Read and Pederson earned the assists, giving them and Tiltgen four points on the night. Trent Clark finished things off with an empty net goal at 18:07 off passes from Mike McGhan and David Neale.
