Dec. 29, 2002 The San Diego Gulls broke their own club record by winning their tenth straight game, outplaying their long-time rival the Long Beach Ice Dogs in a 1-0 game Sunday night at the San Diego Sports Arena. Red-hot goaltender Trevor Koenig earned his fifth shutout of the season, his third against the Ice Dogs. San Diego (18-10-1) now pulls even with the Bakersfield Condors for second place in West Coast Hockey League standings. Long Beach (12-16-2) sits in fifth place. San Diego's Sylvain Deschatelets earned the first goal, lighting the lamp on a power play goal at 11:14 of the first period. Cory Cyrenne found the puck along the boards and passed back to defenseman Kevin Grant on the blue line. Grant's slapshot from the blue line was re-directed by Deschatelets, who was standing at the left post, to beat Long Beach goaltender Mike Buzak low on his stick side. The goal was Deschatelets' seventh of the season. Ashlee Langdone celebrated his San Diego homecoming by dropping the gloves with Ice Dog Tyler Willis with just 11 seconds remaining in the first period. In typical Langdone-esque style, the San Diego heavyweight skated away with arms raised victorious to the eruption of the 5,433 in attendance. Both players received five-minute fighting penalties for their rendezvous at center ice. Both teams skated to a scoreless second period despite multiple power play opportunities. The Gulls kept their defense tight, only allowing four shots to reach Koenig in twenty minutes of play. Buzak stepped up as well, stoning Gulls' winger Mark Pederson on a short-handed breakaway opportunity mid-way through the period. Buzak faced ten shots in the period. As in the first, tempers flared during the final seconds of the second period. Deschatelets and Nathan Horne exchanged pleasantries, earning them both five minutes for fighting plus a ten-minute misconduct for Horne. Despite multiple power-play opportunities in the third period, neither team was able to find the back of the net until the final minutes. Dean Tiltgen notched the second goal, his 16th of the season. Mark Pederson and Dan Cousineau earned the assists on the goal that came at 17:23 of the third period. The final point came at 19:11 of the third when Gulls' rookie Trent Clark scored an empty net goal as Buzak was skating off the ice. Dennis Mullen and Mike McGhan earned the assists. San Diego now owns a 5-1-0 series edge this season against the Ice Dogs. Notepad |
