Fresno Dumps Gulls, 8-3

»More Hockey News

Feb. 4, 2003

Glen Gulutzan lit the lamp four times, leading the Fresno Falcons to an 8-3 victory over the San Diego Gulls Tuesday night, before 3,240 at Selland Arena. With the win, the Falcons move to within one point of the Blue and Orange.

Fresno (24-15-5) drew first blood 5:46 into the first period on Colin Embley's 15th goal. Embley got free at the right post, took a centering feed from Jordan Landry and jammed the puck behind Cris Classen. The Gulls (26-14-2) had a handful of chances in the opening period but Mark Gowan, who's now won eight straight, kept them of the scoreboard.

Jason McBain put the Falcons up 2-0 with his second goal 5:18 into the second. Jason Weaver stole the puck and fired a shot that Classen saved. McBain, however, was right on the doorstep to put home the rebound.

The Gulls quickly tied it as Clayton Read went to work, scoring two goals 20 seconds apart. He got his first at 6:45 tipping in a Trevor Sherban slap shot from the point. He came right back with his second – 15th of the year – at 7:05.

But just when you thought San Diego had a chance, the Falcons exploded with three straight tallies. Gulutzan led the assault with two straight goals. He got his first at 9:27 and second 1:39 later with Fresno on the power play. Drew Schoneck gave the Falcons a commanding 5-2 lead with his third marker at 13:06.

San Diego drew within two on Dean Tiltgen's 18th 7:08 into the third, but that was as close as they could get. Scott Borders sealed the Fresno win with his 15th three minutes later.

Gulutzan and the Falcons weren't done however. He bagged his hat trick goal at the 16:00 mark and his fourth of the night – eighth of the season – at 18:16.
