With the two points, San Diego now trails the first-place Idaho Steelheads by seven points in the West Coast Hockey League Standings. The red-hot Bakersfield Condors sit in second place, remaining one point ahead of the Gulls. It took nearly half the game before anyone could light the lamp, but WCHL all-time leading scorer Dean Larson finally did 10:18 into the second period, giving Anchorage (2-10-1) a 1-0 lead. Jirj Jakes fired a shot that sailed wide of Koenig, but Larson was right there to tip home his sixth goal of the season. B.J. Young earned the second assist. It was only the second time this season the Aces have scored the game's first goal. San Diego (7-6-1) knotted the contest with 16 seconds left in the period on Clayton Read's third goal. Dennis Purdie led a three-on-two rush and dumped a bouncing shot towards Anchorage goaltender Christian Soucy. After a scramble in front of Soucy, Read was able to jam in the equalizer and get the Gulls on the board. The Gulls had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the third period with a full two-minute, five-on-three power play, but came up empty. The Blue and Orange finished 0 for 8 on the power play, which included three two-man advantages. Anchorage was foiled in the third as well and the game headed to the shootout. In the extra frame, San Diego got markers from Mark Pederson and Sylvain Deschatelets. Koenig turned aside all four Anchorage shooters. Notepad |
